What in the hell kind of chalk board eraser is that?? I remember having to use water and sponges to get the board that clean. That is epically satisfying!

level 2

Looks like it’s kind of a spongey eraser. With water.

level 3
728 points · 5 days ago

Is it wet? I was assuming it was, because of how quickly the chalk came off, but it didn’t change the color of the board which is usually what happens when you wet it down.

level 4

I’m pretty sure it’s wet, but the only reason I think that is because of the water dripping off of it.

level 2

I honestly didn't think teachers used chalkboards any longer.

level 3

Truly I tell you: as long as we mathematicians exist; so too will there be blackboards.

level 4

What’s wrong with dry erase boards?

level 5

It's hard to use chalk on them.

level 6
level 6

I don't know why but I laughed my ass off to this.

level 5

It’s not necessarily that whiteboards are bad, it’s more that blackboards are preferable.

  1. Chalk lasts longer and doesn’t dry out, as compared to dry erase markers

  2. blackboards are way easier (and cheaper) to clean then whiteboards

  3. Chalk may cause more of a mess than dry erase markers, but the mess is easier to clean. Chalk dust is super easy to get off of clothing, while dry erase stains require that clothing be washed.

  4. Even the highest quality chalk is WAY cheaper than baseline markers per-unit (and often lasts much longer, in my experience).

  5. The dark background puts less strain on your eyes than the light background does. This may seem minor, but when it’s 3 AM and you’ve been working on this problem since noon, it definitely makes a difference.

  6. (We’re getting pretty subjective at this point) The whiteboard does not have enough friction to it. The way that the market slides around on the board really messes with my penmanship.

  7. You don’t get light headed from smelling too much chalk. This is often not the case with whiteboard markers.

  8. People are less likely to steal chalk then they are to steal whiteboard markers, thus adding to the cost-benefit of chalk.

And the list goes on.

Oh yeah, and also because we’re mathematicians and we’re stubborn.

level 6

Because white spots on your pants around the pockets is sexy!

Chalk sticks are easier on the environment than plastic pens

level 6

I'm calling shenanigans on #2. I don't know what kind of pens she was using on the whiteboards; but I use a spray bottle filled with ethanol or isopropanol along with a rag or paper towels and the dry erase marks come right off with minimal effort. This works even with marks left on for several weeks and also the dark residues left over from using an eraser. Additionally those dry erase markers are excellent for writing on fume hood sashes and marking glassware.

level 7

Okay, sure. You keep using your isopropyl. I’ll keep good old H2O. But sure, let’s say I cede you that point out of goodwill. I’ve still got 7 more. I’m also not saying that whiteboard markers are useless, but let’s just say that I’m not exactly planning on doing any proofs on fume hoods anytime soon. ;)

level 8

Man, you really do do maths! 😂👍

My professors get frustrated because the markers run out all the time and a marker might be working fine and then suddenly stop working. Plus, professors and students will take markers from each other if you leave them laying around, sometimes letting them dry out.

level 6

When your marker runs dry, you just steal a good one and replace it with your bad one.

Lots of mathematicians are old or recently taught by people who are old. The chalk habit keeps getting passed down.

level 5
10 points · 5 days ago

left handed people exist

level 5

Well for one, the plastic markers are really wasteful because teachers go through them pretty quickly. But I think the main thing is the feel of writing.

level 6

I’d take the feel of a marker over chalk any day. I also hate when my hands get all chalky.

1 more reply

level 3

Most don’t. Everything is dry erase now.

level 4

We still have a bunch at my university. They're mostly in old buildings that haven't been remodeled since they were built, though, and the newer buildings have dry-erase boards.

level 5
45 points · 5 days ago

Yeah. The math department at my school was chalk full of them. I think some of the professors preferred them, no idea why.

level 6

I'm in favor of chalkboards, they don't have the permanant marker mistake problem and it's easy to see whether the chalk is all dried up or not, sometimes i have to try 4-5 of those stupid pens before i find one that is working.

level 7

I imagine the fumes coming off them can be pretty intense too, especially if writing a lot for a lecture everyday or presentations etc. I'm sure there are fume-free versions, but I also doubt universities and the often low paid elementary/high school teachers would be shelling out for what's probably a much higher priced marker.

level 7

One of my dry-erase boards had permanent marker on it until a student casually walks up to the mark, draws over it with dry-erase market, and erases it all completely. I almost hugged that student I was so in awe/excited.

Once had a tall professor try to draw on a projection on a small white board that went off the board (had made the screen go up) and ended up marking on the wall. Tried to wipe it off and only got worse. Whole campus got new tall but really weird white boards after that year that don't erase well at all

1 more reply

level 3

Most don't it's just universities aren't going to completely remove them especially from less popular rooms or in rooms where the board is typically not used as much, in the video you see the projector at the top so the lecture theatre is probably used more for presentations rather than class tutorials.

level 4

Every once in a while Universities will renovate a building and you can pick up huge chalk boards really cheaply. My friend got a ten foot long board for $15, and now of course it sits in his garage because he doesn't have a wall big enough to put it on.

level 3

Thank fuck. The sound of chalk on a chalkboard is the absolute worst. I hated having to go and listen to those God damn boards all day. Sorry for the mini rant I just fucking hate chalk/chalkboards

level 4

level 5
